Sony block cameras have become the solution of choice for many vision system manufacturers and system integrators who require a cost-effective solution for image acquisition. With external frame grabbers that convert these block cameras into GigE or USB 3.0 cameras, designers can significantly simplify cabling and lower computing costs. Typically, Sony block video interfaces require multiple cables for video transmission and control, external power sources for cameras, and PCI frame grabbers to capture images at the PC or display. This results in more complex systems, longer design times, higher costs, and limited component selection. In comparison, external frame grabbers are available that easily convert Sony Block cameras into standard-compliant GigE Vision or USB3 Vision cameras. The external frame grabbers transmit video with low, consistent latency at high frame rates between Sony block cameras and computing platforms or display panels. Video, along with power and control data, is transmitted over low-cost Ethernet or USB 3.0 cabling to existing ports on the computer or display. By eliminating the need for a PCIe frame grabber, designers can employ smaller form-factor, lower-cost computing platforms – such as laptops and single-board systems – for processing and analysis. In a surveillance application, the external frame grabbers convert images from a Sony block camera into a Vision standard compliant video stream. As illustrated below, an iPORT SB-GigE External Frame Grabber converts the video in an image feed that is transmitted over an Ethernet cable.   Untitled             With all cameras connected to a common network, video can be transmitted easily to any combination of analysis computers and displays using a basic Ethernet switch. For example, the video feed from a GigE thermal camera can be blended with images from a visible light camera to give end-users more detail on a region of interest. Aegis will be demonstrating line of external frame grabbers from Pleora that bring the cabling and computing advantages of GigE and USB3 Vision to Sony Block Cameras at AUVSI XPONENTAL 2016.
