A few weeks ago we posted about the Toshiba IK-HR1H remote head camera. Today we will take a look at one of Toshiba’s first remote-head CCD color cameras, the Toshiba IK-M44. Still a hot commodity, the camera works with three optional CCD camera heads: the IK-M44H (1/2 inch lipstick), IK-C44H (1/2 C-mount), and (1/3 inch micro) IK-UM44H. Hook any of these camera heads up to the CCU (IK-CU44A) and your set is complete!

So how does this camera stack up against the competition? Having seen how the lipstick camera has been put to use on television, the possibilities are endless. From ABC’s hit show “What Would You Do?” to movies like the Nanny Diaries, where Laura Linney’s character implants a lipstick camera inside of a teddy bear to spy on Scarlett Johansson (the babysitter) to ensure she is properly caring for her son, lipstick and micro cameras alike have been taken everywhere imaginable. They are becoming more commonly seen for use in endoscopy procedures, microscopy, scientific imaging, machine vision, and even for non-destructive testing.

So what does the CCU deliver for all of the camera heads?

  • 470 line resolution from all Camera heads
  • 17mm O.D. (1/2 inch CCD) Micro Camera head
  • Digital Signal Processing (DSP) enhances image quality
  • RS-232 allows PC control of Camera's CCU
  • 410,000 pixel CCD images
  • Auto-shutter mode controls light from 1/60 to 1/10,000 of a second
  • Automatic tracking white balance
  • Simultaneous Y/C and Composite Outputs
  • Minimum illumination of 2.5 lux
  • Cable lengths of up to 30 meters

Beyond this point now we need to consider which camera head works best for your application needs.

Camera Heads

The IK-M44H is a ½ inch IT-CCD lipstick camera head that has a minimum illumination of 2.5 lux. The IK-M44H is the lightest of the three camera heads, weighing a total of 0.6 ounces.

Next up is the IK-C44H, which also has a ½ inch IT CCD image sensor, but it is the only C-Mount camera head of the bunch and has an S/N ratio of 46dB. It’s minimum illumination comes in at 1.5 lux and the total weight is 2.8 ounces.

And last but not least we have the IK-UM44H 1/3 inch IT CCD camera head. The minimum illumination of objects for this camera head is 3.5 lux, the highest of the three, and has a standard intensity of illumination at 40 lux (the IK-M44H is 30 lux while the IK-C44H is 20 lux). All of the cameras have the same amount of effective pixels (768 (H) x 494 (V)), resolution (more than 470 (H) x 350 (V)), and image area (6.54mm (H) x 4.89mm (V)).
