Sony's new XC-505 "cigar camera" is small, it's compact and it doesn't require a CCU (camera control unit), making it that much more versatile.  Modeled after the highly successful XC-555 camera from Sony, this newer model has increased sensitivity,  one-push white balance, a built-in color bar, DTL function, noise reduction (2D/3D) and RS-232C support.

The NF lens system that it incorporates is also a great feature because the camera can be easily converted into a flexible C mount lens allowing for additional lens options depending on the application it is being used for.

Honestly my favorite feature on cameras is always the "E-flip" feature, where one can mount the camera upside and down and still come out with a right-side up image.

Versatility in a camera is ideal because it can be incorporated in a variety of ways....this camera is rugged enough and small enough to be put in or near a space shuttle to record the details of a shuttle launch.  Then, take this same camera and attach it to a helmet and use it as a high quality, long-lasting POV cam to record sporting events in the middle of the action.  Need to use it for surveillance and security purposes?  Place this tiny, obscure camera somewhere where people won't be able to detect it like inside air vents, dome housings, atop street lights, in parking lots and even purses and briefcases. Gimbals, Humvees, helicopters, pick and place machines, quality inspection, medical imaging, the list goes on and on.

All in all, for the price, this camera is going to be quite popular once it hits the market.  At the moment orders are being taken for the XC-505 and the XC-505P but that haven't hit distribution shelves quite yet.
